Harappan Civilisation Notes Class 12 in Hindi | NCERT Theme 1 – Bricks, Beads and Bones
Themes in Indian History – Part I के Theme 1 “Bricks, Beads and Bones” में इस सभ्यता का विस्तृत अध्ययन कराया गया है।
— Where Do We Begin?
बच्चों, ज़रा सोचो — imagine you are digging in your backyard and suddenly you find a small square stone stamp with strange animal carvings and unknown signs. That is EXACTLY what happened in the 19th century!
He was the first Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), He thought it was just some old object — he couldn’t place it in time. Harappa simply did not fit his framework.
Teacher’s Note: यही हमें पहला बड़ा lesson देता है — a historian’s framework (the lens through which they see the past) deeply affects what they discover and what they miss.
Terminologies, Places and Time
Two main names:
(a) Harappan Civilisation — Harappa
Late Harappan: 1900–1300 BCE — decline
याद करो इस trick से: “Early = Experimental, Mature = Magnificent, Late = Leaving.” 😄
Five major cities थे: Mohenjodaro, Harappa, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Ganweriwala.
Agriculture and Food
Food! Through charred seeds, animal bones, and terracotta figurines.
Crops —
Finds of rice are relatively rare, which is interesting given how central rice is to India today.
Animals —
But there were also bones of wild species — boar, deer, gharial.
They tell us whether animals were domesticated based on bone structure and patterns.
अब यहाँ एक tricky बात है — we know they HAD agriculture, but reconstructing HOW they did it is hard.
Evidence: Ploughed field at Kalibangan (Rajasthan) — ये Harappan level से मिला! The field had two sets of furrows at right angles — suggesting two different crops grown together (intercropping).
Terracotta models of bulls indicate oxen were used for ploughing। Traces of canals at Shortughai (Afghanistan) — irrigation का evidence।

Mohenjodaro Town Planning
Mohenjodaro — “The Mound of the Dead.” It is the most well-known site, and the first to be properly discovered and excavated.
Two Sections
The Lower Town was also walled. Buildings were built on platforms.
Drainage system of Harappa ancient world में unmatched था।
Domestic waste water had to flow into the street drains — so every house needed at least one wall along a street.
Mackay (excavator) wrote: “It is certainly the most complete ancient system as yet discovered.” — Imagine, 4000 😅
3.2 Domestic Architecture —
Privacy concern था — no windows on ground floor walls। Staircases suggest second storeys or rooftops.
That’s extraordinary — every neighbourhood had water access.
3.3 The Citadel —
Citadel पर दो most important structures मिले:
(a) Warehouse / Granary — Goods store
(b) The Great Bath — ये सबसे fascinating है!
Great Bath एक large rectangular tank था courtyard में — steps on north and south, waterproofed with gypsum mortar and bricks set on edge.
Important question: Great Bath ritual था या practical? Scholars believe it was meant for special ritual bathing — पर ये confirmed नहीं है। Exam में लिखो: scholars suggest it may have been used for special ritual bathing.
— Social Differences
4.1 Burials —
Dead were generally laid in pits. Some graves had pottery and ornaments, suggesting belief in afterlife.
Mid-1980s में Harappa cemetery में एक grave मिला जिसमें three shell rings, a jasper bead, और hundreds of micro beads थे — एक male skull के पास।
But on the whole — Harappans did not believe in burying precious things with the dead।
4.2 Luxuries vs Utilities
Archaeologists artefacts को utilitarian (daily use) और luxury (rare, costly) में divide करते हैं।
Faience pots — ये ground sand/silica + gum + heat से बनते थे। Probably considered precious because they were difficult to make.
Interesting observation: Miniature pots of faience mostly Mohenjodaro और Harappa में मिले — not Kalibangan जैसे small settlements में।
Craft Production Chanhudaro — The Craft Capital
Chanhudaro map पर locate करो — ये tiny settlement था, less than 7 hectares (as compared to Mohenjodaro’s 125 hectares)! पर almost exclusively devoted to craft production: bead-making, shell-cutting, metal-working, seal-making.
Beads —
Materials थे: carnelian (beautiful red), jasper, crystal, quartz, steatite; metals like copper, bronze, gold; shell, faience, terracotta।
Shapes थे: disc, cylindrical, spherical, barrel-shaped, segmented। Some were decorated by incising or painting, कुछ पर designs etched थे।
First, yellowish raw material को fire करते थे (this turned it red). Then chipped into rough shapes, ground, polished, drilled.
Steatite का trick: Steatite is a very soft stone — easily worked. Beads were moulded out of steatite powder paste। This allowed making a variety of geometric shapes impossible with harder stone.
Exam Tip: The question ‘List materials used to make beads in Harappan civilisation‘ is a favourite. Remember: Stone (carnelian, jasper, steatite, crystal), Metal (copper, bronze, gold), Shell, Faience, Terracotta.
5.1 Identifying Craft Centres
Indicators: raw materials, whole shells, copper ore, tools, unfinished objects, rejects, waste material.
Nageshwar and Balakot (coastal settlements) — specialised centres for making shell objects — bangles, ladles, inlay.
Harappan Civilisation Notes Class 12 MP3 Part 3
— Strategies for Procuring Materials
6.1 Establishing Settlements
Nageshwar, Balakot — shell
Lothal — carnelian (Gujarat), steatite (N. Gujarat), metal (Rajasthan)
6.2 Trade and Commerce—
Archaeological finds suggest copper came from Oman (south-eastern tip of Arabian peninsula)। Chemical analyses show common origin of Omani और Harappan copper।
Evidence: एक large Harappan jar coated with thick black clay Oman में मिला। This coating prevents percolation of liquids — maybe the Harappans exchanged contents for Omani copper?
Mesopotamian texts (3rd millennium BCE) में ‘Meluhha’ का ज़िक्र है — many scholars think this refers to the Harappan region. Meluhha से मिलने वाली चीज़ें: carnelian, lapis lazuli, copper, gold, varieties of wood.
Mesopotamian sites have Harappan seals, weights, dice, beads।
Contact regions mentioned: Dilmun (Bahrain), Magan (Oman), Meluhha (Harappan region).
Seals Script and Weights
7.1 Seals and Sealings
A bag of goods was tied with rope, wet clay applied, sealed — अगर bag पहुँचे बिना tamper हुए, तो seal intact होगी।
Usually ये show करते थे name and title of owner, और एक animal motif (जानवर की picture)।
7.2 The Script —
Harappan script remains undeciphered to this day.
It was not alphabetical — each sign stands for a word or syllable (logographic/syllabic).
Most inscriptions short हैं — सबसे लंबी में about 26 signs।
Direction: Right to Left — seals की right side पर spacing ज़्यादा है, left पर cramping। The engraver worked right to left and then ran out of space!
Writing किस किस चीज़ पर मिली: seals, copper tools, jar rims, copper tablets, jewellery, bone rods, even an ancient signboard at Dholavira!
7.3 Weights —
Harappan weights chert stone के बने थे — generally cubical, no markings।
Smaller weights probably used for weighing jewellery and beads.
— Ancient Authority
Evidence: Harappan cemeteries show little social differentiation.
‘Mohenjodaro had a separate ruler, Harappa another.’
View 3: Single state — similar bricks, seals, weights सब cities में। ‘The standardised ratio of brick size’, settlements near raw materials — ये suggest करता है one unified state.
Teacher’s take: कोई palace या temple clearly identified नहीं हुई। The famous ‘priest-king’ statue was labelled so because Mesopotamian archaeologists were familiar with priest-kings — it’s an assumption, not a proven fact.
— Decline of Harappan Civilisation
By about 1800 BCE, most of the Mature Harappan sites in Sind and Cholistan had been abandoned. पर साथ में new settlements expanded in Gujarat, Haryana, and western UP.
After 1900 BCE, ये signs of decline आए:
Disappearance: seals, script, standardised weights, special beads।
Decline: long-distance trade, craft specialisation, writing।
Deterioration: house construction quality
Theories for the Decline —
- Climate change / Deforestation
- Excessive floods / Rivers drying up
- Overuse of landscape / Ecological collapse
पर George Dales (1960s) ने prove किया — skeletons at the site did not belong to same period, there’s no destruction level, no warrior bodies. Invasion theory wrong है!
DNA Evidence (Rakhigarhi, 2019): Recent archaeogenetic research shows Harappans are ancestors of modern South Asian population। Genetic roots go back 10,000 BCE. Continuity without large-scale Aryan immigration is indicated.

Discovering the Harappan Civilisation
10.1 Cunningham’s Confusion
They thought Indian history began with the Ganga valley.
10.2 A New Old Civilisation
1920s में — Daya Ram Sahni (1921, Harappa), Rakhal Das Banerji (1922, Mohenjodaro) ने excavations किये।
1924 — John Marshall (ASI Director-General) ने announced discovery of new civilisation — Indus valley को!
S.N. Roy ने लिखा था: “Marshall left India three thousand years older than he had found her.”
10.3 New Techniques — R.E.M. Wheeler
Wheeler (took over as DG of ASI, 1944) ने proper stratigraphy follow की।
This meant artefacts from different time periods were mixed up.
Wheeler ने stratigraphy (layers of soil) follow किया। This is crucial — lower layers are older, upper layers are more recent.

1️⃣ Past को जोड़ना — Problems of Piecing Together the Past
11.1 Classifying Finds
Two ways to classify:
(a) By material — stone, clay, metal, bone, ivory…
(b) By function — tool, ornament, ritual object, toy।
Context matters! Same artefact in different contexts = different meaning। House? Drain? Grave? Kiln?
11.2 Problems of Interpretation
Why? Because we’re reading objects, not texts।
Early archaeologists ने terracotta female figurines = mother goddesses माना।But that’s an assumption.
‘Proto-Shiva’ seals — ये seals show करती हैं a figure seated cross-legged, surrounded by animals।Some scholars call it proto-Shiva. BUT the Rigveda (earliest text, 1500-1000 BCE) mentions a god Rudra, who was later identified as Shiva. Rudra is NOT depicted as Pashupati (lord of animals), nor as a yogi in the Rigveda.
Key Lesson: Archaeologists often move from known to unknown — present to past।
Quick Revision —
Q1: What do seals tell us about Harappan society? → Trade, long-distance communication, owner identity, animal motifs — possibly religious significance।
Q2: How do archaeologists trace socio-economic differences? → Burials (grave goods), distribution of artefacts (luxury vs utilitarian), spatial distribution in settlements।
Q3: Does drainage system indicate town planning? → Yes! Streets-first layout, uniform brick ratios, Great Bath construction — all indicate prior planning।
Q4: Why is the Harappan script a problem? → Undeciphered → can’t understand language, thought, religion, or governance properly।
Q5: What are the limitations of archaeological interpretation? → Only durable materials survive; valuable objects recycled; finds accidental not typical; function inferred not proven।
✨ Best of Luck! ✨
